Characteristics

The Royal Python is the smallest of the African Pythons not usually growing to much above a metre in length. Its size makes it popular in the pet business but wild caught animals often do not take well to captivity and may refuse to eat sometimes to the point that they die. They have beautiful dark markings, often like the rungs of a ladder, their undersides are much lighter. Their heads are triangular and distinct from their necks. Both males and females have vestigial legs in the form of anal spurs. They are oviparous. The female lays 3-11 large eggs which she incubates, often underground, until they hatch after 60 days. Their diet consists primarily of small mammals, which they kill by crushing them until heart or respiration cease, swallow whole and digest completely. Python regius is found throughout Equatorial Africa. They tend to inhabit those border areas where the forest meets the savannah or the desert. They like to find solid structures such as a tree or a rock that they can lie beside and push against. When threatened they gather themselves into a tight ball with their heads in the centre, hence the common name of Ball Python. Their association with royalty, particularly Cleopatra who is said to have kept one wrapped around her wrist, gives them their scientific name and the other common name of Royal Python. Like other related constrictors they have an excellent sense of smell picking up scents on their forked tongues and transferring them to the highly sensitive Jacobson's organs on the roofs of their mouths. They also have a form of heat vision using infra red detectors situated in pits between nostril and eye.

The remedy was proved by Brigitte Klotzsch in Cologne in 2000. There were 5 female and one male prover who took the remedy in 30c potency. There were also dream or meditative style provings involving 32 people and the 200c potency. Obtaining the sample of blood from the python was not easy. Pricks with a needle and then a deep cut with a razor blade produced not a single drop of blood. A leech was placed on the snake and when it was removed a drop of blood could be collected from the wound. The snake's blood seems to have tremendous clotting power, the leech died soon after and was found to be full of coagulated blood. The snake was a captured wild one that had refused to eat since it had been caught in Nigeria.

The Python is closely related to the Boa constrictor and there are similarities between the constrictors. The Boa remedy was made from the fat of the snake rather than the blood and this may account for some of the differences. The respiratory and circulatory symptoms which are absent in Boa are much more clearly expressed in Python regius. Python has some similar gastro-intestinal symptoms but they do not dominate the picture in the way that they do in Boa.

The primary feeling in Python, as in Boa, is a feeling of losing control. A feeling that is described as being swept or sucked into a whirlpool or vortex. There is a feeling of being forced to do things of having no choice. Even a sensation that her body is not under her control.

The reaction to this is to depend on relationships, especially very close relationships either with a partner or mother child relationships. These relationships offer some form of security but also become restrictive and suffocating. The relationship feels like a prison, or she feels that it will destroy her. Both the patient and the partner become bound in a situation which is damaging both and from which they cannot escape.

There is much forgetfulness and confusion of mind but it can have a particular quality of preventing her from doing what she must do or going where she must go. There are also dreams of getting lost and of being late.

There is a feeling that the mother is of less value than her children, that she must sacrifice herself for the children. This corresponds to a feeling of lack of self worth and of shame. There is also a feeling of being watched, of being in a bell jar. Symptoms, particularly of restriction occur in embarrassing situations, or there is inappropriate laughter when embarrassed. While everyone can see and watch her she is unable to fully perceive the outside world and experiences everything as if under a blanket.

The reaction is a deep depression. Lying in bed staring at the walls. There is a desire to commit suicide but even here the relationship has a strangle hold on her and she won't for the sake of the children or the partner.

The remedy is an extremely fearful one but the fears are not particular. There are fears of water, of starvation, of sharp objects, of heights. Rather there is a strong sense of foreboding that something bad will happen, a fear of catastrophe. She is afraid to go to sleep because she thinks she will die. There is a clairvoyance, as in most snakes, but it is generally about something bad that will happen. There are fearful dreams and dreams of catastrophes.

There are amorous dreams, but often they have an element of compulsion or a feeling of being trapped, including being trapped in a sex hell. Awake there is a general aversion to sex and to sexual touch. Orgasms are absent. Sex seems to be part of the dynamic in relationships that restricts, traps and suffocates. There is a fear of marriage.

There is a distinctive sense of lateral division and separation. One side feels constrictive and the other expansive or one side is in this world and the other in another. Such a division is often connected to gender issues but it is not clear in what way that applies. It may have something to do with a generally masculine order in conflict with a primeval feminine chaos.

For an animal with only the faintest vestigal limbs there are a great number of limb symptoms. They are generally either sensations of constriction, weight or being pulled or they involve the nerves, especially anaesthesia, heaviness and numbness though there are also twitchings and electrical shocks.

As would be expected in an animals that kills by constriction the sense of constriction and suffocation is strong. There are many sensations of pressure and weight that are often described as as if a stone or rock were pressing on the part. There are constrictions: of the throat; of the heart; of the chest and respiration, as if corseted when taking a breath, and of the abdomen. This constriction and suffocation is also the main emotional sensation in the remedy. They are better in the open air and in natural surroundings.

The remedy would seem to be an extremely haemorrhagic one. It was so difficult to get the animal to bleed that the sample of blood could only be obtained by using a leech as an intermediator. The remedy has been used as a first aid coagulent. There are nose bleeds. Menses were extremely heavy and painful. There was a sensation that the uterus had been turned inside out and that blood was pouring out. There was also a fear of bleeding to death.

There are burning pains in the stomach and abdomen but the strongest symptoms were of nausea and a desire to vomit in order to feel better and a need to retch, which seemed as if it would be easy to do. There was also a sensation of some objects, particularly stones in the stomach.

Generally the pains were of a pressing or pulling nature.

There are a number of sensations of heat in different parts but there are also chills and coldness so it would seem to be a lack of control over temperature that is the main symptom.

Artistic correspondences

In Greek mythology Apollo killed the Python at Delphi so replacing the Chthonic, Earth religion with the Apollonic, Sky religion. However, in doing so considerable concessions were made to the old order including a female priestess and the institution of the Pythian games to commemorate the python.
